How do you maintain an AED? Make sure it always works!

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) saves lives, but only if it's in top condition. Nothing is worse than discovering a dead battery or dried-out electrodes during a cardiac arrest . Proper AED maintenance is therefore vital. Here are the most important steps you should take.

Check the status indicator regularly

Most AEDs perform daily or weekly self-tests. You don't need to turn the device on for this.

  • Green light or check mark: Everything is fine.

  • Red light or cross (or a beep): There is a malfunction or a part needs to be replaced. Take immediate action.

Replace the electrodes in time

AED electrodes are provided with a special adhesive gel that dries out over time.

  • Shelf life: Most electrodes last 2 to 5 years . The expiration date is always printed on the packaging.

  • After use: Electrodes are for single use only. Replace them immediately after use.

  • Tip: Always keep a spare set of electrodes in the AED cabinet . View all here AED electrodes .

The AED battery and power supply

The battery of an AED is a powerful component that must be on standby for years and then be able to deliver multiple shocks to defibrillate .

  • Lifespan: Depending on the brand (such as Zoll , Philips or Mindray ), a battery often lasts 2 to 5 years.

  • Replacement: Do not wait until the AED starts beeping, but replace the AED battery preventatively before the expiration date.

Keep the AED clean and easy to find

Dust and moisture can damage electronics.

  • Storage location: Store the AED in a dry, central location in a clearly visible AED cabinet or on an AED wall sign .

  • Accessibility: Ensure the route to the AED is clear of obstacles. If the device is outdoors, always use a weatherproof outdoor AED cabinet with a heater to protect the battery from frost.

Maintenance through training and registration

Maintenance is more than just technology; it's also about ensuring the environment knows what to do.

  • Keep practicing: Make sure your team or neighbors receive AED training regularly. Use a AED trainer and a resuscitation doll .

  • Sign up: Register your AED with HartslagNu. This way, emergency responders can find your device in the event of an emergency call nearby.
