Tweedehands AED kopen: slim of risicovol?

Buying a second-hand AED: smart or risky?

An AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) can make the difference between life and death in the event of cardiac arrest. However, a new AED is not cheap. That is why many people wonder: is a second-hand AED a good alternative? In this blog we look at the pros and cons of used AEDs and what you should pay attention to when purchasing.

Why do people choose a second-hand AED?

The most important reason is of course the price. A new AED quickly costs between €1,200 and €2,000. A second-hand model can be hundreds of euros cheaper. For example, for sports clubs, schools or small entrepreneurs with a limited budget, that sounds attractive. In addition, there are companies that offer used AEDs with maintenance, inspection and warranty.

The risks of a second-hand AED

However, there are also risks associated with buying a used AED:

  • Battery age: AED batteries have a limited lifespan. An older battery may fail at a critical time.

  • Expired electrodes: Electrodes have an expiration date. Are they past their expiration date? They may be unreliable or unusable.

  • No warranty or maintenance history: When purchasing privately, you often have no insight into how the AED has been used, stored or maintained.

  • Outdated technology: Older AEDs may not have modern features such as CPR feedback or multi-language instructions.

  • Outside the warranty period: Many second-hand AEDs are no longer covered by the manufacturer's warranty. Any defects or costs are then entirely at your own expense.
    When is it responsible ?

A second-hand AED may be a good choice if:

  • You buy from a reliable supplier who thoroughly checks the AED and delivers it with a new battery and electrodes .

  • The AED comes with a warranty period (for example 1 or 2 years).

  • You know exactly how old the device is and whether it complies with current guidelines.

  • The device comes from a reliable source , such as a recently closed location or a company upgrading to a new model.

Our recommendation

Do you want to buy a second-hand AED? Then we recommend that you only do this via a recognized provider that offers transparency about the technical condition of the device. Always check whether the battery and electrodes have been replaced, check the warranty period and preferably choose a recent model that is still supported.
