Do you want to make a difference when every second counts? Becoming a citizen first responder is one of the most valuable steps you can take. By registering with HartslagNu, you directly contribute to safety in your area. In this article, we explain how it works, what you need, and why having an AED nearby is essential.

What is a citizen first responder?

A citizen first responder is a volunteer who is called upon via the HartslagNu app or SMS when there is a report of a cardiac arrest in the vicinity. Because citizen first responders are already in the area, they arrive at the scene an average of 2.5 minutes faster than an ambulance. Those first minutes are decisive: the sooner someone starts CPR and uses an AED, the greater the chance of survival.

How to become a citizen first responder?

Anyone aged 18 or older with a valid CPR certificate can register via HartslagNu. A medical background is not required. A basic AED and CPR course lasting a few hours is sufficient to learn the necessary skills. During such a training, you will learn:

  • Recognizing a cardiac arrest
  • Performing chest compressions and ventilation according to current ERC guidelines
  • How an AED works: how to connect the device and follow its voice instructions

Why is an AED nearby so important?

To be able to provide effective help within the crucial 6-minute window, access to an AED is indispensable. When called via HartslagNu, responders are simultaneously sent to the victim and to the nearest AED. Every minute without defibrillation reduces the chance of survival by approximately 10%.

More and more private individuals, associations, and businesses are therefore choosing to purchase an AED themselves. Whether it's a Philips HeartStart, a ZOLL AED Plus, or a Mindray BeneHeart, the most important thing is that the device is reliable, maintained, and ready for immediate use.

What to look for when buying an AED?

  1. Maintenance: An AED's battery and electrodes have a limited lifespan. With an AED maintenance contract, you ensure that the device is always ready for use, without you having to think about it yourself.
  2. Accessibility: An outdoor AED cabinet makes the device accessible 24/7 to everyone in the vicinity, even outside office hours.
  3. Costs: The purchase price of an AED varies by brand and model. Don't want to make a large investment right away? Then renting or leasing an AED is an excellent alternative.

Is the course reimbursed?

Many health insurance companies reimburse a CPR course fully or partially through supplementary insurance. Employers are also increasingly investing in certified first responders in the workplace. Inquire with your insurer or employer about the possibilities.
