Do you know how to perform CPR?

In an emergency situation, every second counts. CPR is a vital skill that can save lives, especially in the event of cardiac arrest. Do you know how to perform CPR? In this blog, we will explain the essential steps you need to follow to perform CPR effectively.

Why CPR is Critical

Cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, at any time and in any place. A victim's chance of survival decreases with every minute that CPR is not performed. By knowing how to perform CPR, you can act quickly and effectively and potentially save a life.

Essential steps for resuscitation

  1. Check the safety
Make sure the environment is safe for both you and the victim.
  2. Check consciousness
Gently shake the victim's shoulders and ask if everything is okay. If the victim does not respond, call 911 immediately.
  3. Check the breathing
Look, listen and feel for up to 10 seconds. If the victim is not breathing normally, begin CPR.
  4. Start with chest compressions
Place your hands in the center of the chest and press down firmly (2-2.5 inches deep) at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute. Make sure to fully recoil the chest between compressions.
  5. Administer breathing
If you are trained in mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, give 2 breaths after every 30 compressions. Close the victim's nose and give rescue breaths while making sure the chest rises.
  6. Keep going
Continue alternating 30 compressions and 2 breaths until professional help arrives or the victim becomes responsive.

Importance of training and preparation

It is essential to take regular training to keep your skills up to date. Many organisations offer first aid and CPR courses so you are well prepared. Check out the Heart Foundation for more information on courses near you.

Provide an AED

Having an AED nearby can significantly increase a victim's chances of survival. Make sure you know where the nearest AED is and how to use it. For more information about AEDs, visit our webshop.
